Mid-Year Careers Update

Surf Coast SC has a commitment to improving students understanding of career opportunities both through the curriculum and by promoting engagement in taster programs and activities that develop their knowledge of career pathways and employability skills.

As part of the Work Ready Program year 9 students have taken part in a career expo and they have prepared a resume, a cover letter and had a ‘mock’ interview with a community representative. This is designed to help them begin to think about the world of work and develop their employability skills.

Currently at year 10 we have students taking part in a range of taster programs - Experience Community Services, the Internet of Things and Girls Leading in Advanced Manufacturing (GLAM). Students participating in the community services taster explore the community services industry by visiting providers such as St Laurence, Karingal, Barwon Health & Headspace. Students going to the Internet of Things are based at the Gordon East campus and explore coding and applying emerging technologies to real world problems and the GLAM participants are visiting sites such as Deakin Engineering amongst a range of other industry visits designed around advanced manufacturing. We also have students going out to a diverse range of industries for work experience including the Magistrates Court, plumbing and retail. I would like to encourage students who have yet to arrange a placement to start now or come and to see me in the Careers room for some help with the process.

At year 11 and 12 students are undertaking Structured Workplace Learning and doing placement across a variety of vocations including painting and decorating and hospitality. This provides the students with the opportunity to integrate practical on-the-job experience with study and build relationships with potential employers. The year 11’s have also had a pathways presentation from Deakin and the Gordon as well as a study skills session to increase their knowledge of career options in the lead up to year 12.
